ARTIST STATEMENT:
The inspiration of my work has always been fascination with people. They achieve life through techniques I developed to show New York has become a magnet, the essence of my art. New Yorkers come here from everywhere, bringing energy and hope. They join the rush of activity, compelling me to listen to their voices and hear the pulsing beat of their footsteps; the beat of the city I love. Each piece begins with a drawing of an urban scene. Early drawings on small canvas-covered wood panels are glued onto larger canvases. The present method utilizes my hand-cut foam core figures, applying them to various building facades. Sounds of city streets emerge with use of colorful acrylic paints. Grey shadows often appear from the depth of the panels or foam core images. When finally I feel a strong sense of reality, people are placed in the scene and suddenly the painting is complete!
