Artist Statement:
My work deals with the female body, typically my own. I began depicting my own body after thinking extensively about both my relationship to my body, and society’s relationship to it. The perception that we as women often have of our bodies is one that is greatly influenced by imagery in the media. An often warped and twisted viewpoint, one where we scrutinize and perceive an “excess”, an endless abundance of flesh. In my most recent series, I render myself wrapped in plastic, the faces pressed against the plastic allude toward inner pain and suffering. The representation of the [female] flesh wrapped in plastic is reminiscent of meat packaged and sold ready for consumption, just how the female body is often offered up in art history and contemporary visual culture for male consumption.
