Silverman describes the philosophy behind his still-photo work as "counter-culture", in the sense that his photographs are the antithesis to the frenzy of non-stop images that bombard and desensitize us through the mass media. These simple and spontaneously composed, black-and-white pictures offer a respite from that frenzy, one that allows us to truly see with the eye, feel with the heart and remember with the mind’s eye. And, re-awaken an appreciation of what we are and what’s around us.

He uses a venerable, manually-controlled Nikon FE-2 camera body, with a 35 mm to 70 mm lens, which not only affords him mobility, but the relatively short focal distance of the lens also forces him to get close to his subjects; this heightens the intimacy between subject and the viewer.

In addition to photographing in his home city of New York, and his current residence of Sedona, Arizona, he regularly returns to Paris, Florence and Latin America to photograph life on the streets and in the countryside. He continues to look for new places and people to capture in his lens.
